It includes two halves – Penang Island, where the capital city of George Town is situated, along with a strip of southern Peninsula called Seberang Perai (previously Province Wellesley).
Penang’s beaches are fine, although a little lacklustre when compared to those in certain other Malaysian states, but that is more than compensated for by the island’s rich multicultural history dating back to the beginnings of British colonisation from the 18th. Century, and is filled with Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences. Penang is also well known domestically and in Singapore for being the”food heaven” of Malaysia.
George Town — the capital city of Penang and is a favorite spot for visitors as it has several attractive pre-Second World War homes and shophouses, in addition to 19th century churches, temples, mosques, and colonial buildings. George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site (it had been inscribed among the Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca with town of Melaka). The town is clean, safe and well managed. Very walkable as there are sidewalk along most streets and the condition of the pavement is extremely good. Great free maps are available at the Tourist Information Counter located in the middle of the airport arrival halls. 1 thing to notice is that if you consume at a coffeeshop, you must purchase a drink even if you don’t want one or have your drink in your backpack. Some coffeeshop levy a RM0.50 (Jul 2015) table fee if no beverage was ordered.
Batu Ferringhi — on the north shore with white sandy beaches, luxurious resorts and restaurants, a popular place for both locals and people with heaps of water sport activities.
Bayan Lepas — Penang’s main digital manufacturing area and place of its international airport. Georgetown’s satellite city.
Teluk Bahang — a quiet little fishing village in the northwestern tip of the island
Tanjung Bungah — located between George Town and Batu Ferringhi, was a fishing village but today is a resort area with big resorts built along the shore.
Mainland (Seberang Perai)
Butterworth — mainland gateway to Penang, right across the Straits of Malacca from George Town
Bukit Mertajam — funds of Seberang Perai Tengah district
Bandar Perda — 20 minutes from Butterworth and 15 minutes from Penang Bridge
Nibong Tebal — funding of Seberang Perai Selatan district
Simpang Ampat — a little town famous for its nearby seafood at Bukit Tambun and Batu Kawan
Seberang Jaya — satellite township
Tasek Gelugor — a little town 20 minutes from Butterworth
Penang was part of the Malay sultanate of Kedah until 1786, when Captain Francis Light built a fort at the site of present-day Georgetownand was able for the island ceded to the British East India Company. The island, along with Malacca and Singapore, was among the three British Straits Settlements.
The title Penang comes from the Malay word Pinang, means the betel nut (槟榔） shrub (Areca catechu). The title Pulau Pinanginterpreted literally from Malay means”betel nut island”. The first name of Penang was Pulau Ka-satu or”First Island”, it was renamed to Prince of Wales Island on 12 Aug 1786 to commemorate the birthday of the Prince of Wales, afterwards, George IV. Throughout the early and middle portion of the previous century, Penang Island was also called”The Pearl of the Orient”.
Additionally, Penang is the only state where the ethnic Chinese are the majority. Penang also has the third-largest economy amongst the countries of Malaysia, after Selangor and Johor, incredibly because of its little size.
The freight trade has largely shifted down to Port Klang and Singapore because Penang dropped its free-port standing in 1969, but today Penang makes a fantastic living off tourism and electronic equipment manufacturing. Penang was granted Cyber-City standing on 21 June, 2004. In the World Heritage Committee Session in July 2008, Georgetown and Malacca were recorded as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The state of Penang is composed of 2 components, Penang Island, a turtle-shaped island in the Straits of Malacca 8km west of Peninsular Malaysia, and Seberang Perai (previously Province Wellesley), a rectangular-shaped district that’s located on Peninsular Malaysia.
Georgetown is Penang’s capital city and Malaysia’s second largest town. It’s located on Penang Island. Development of the east shore of the island is gradually linking Georgetown, in the northeast, to the industrial city of Bayan Lepas from the southeast, thereby urbanising the whole eastern seaboard of Penang Island. The northern coast, such as Batu Ferringhi, is also being greatly developed and features the island’s best beaches and hotels. The island’s western side remains relatively undeveloped and has a calm”kampung” lifestyle (village) feel about it.
This means temperatures of between approximately 22°C/72°F (nighttime ) and 30°C/86°F (day), between 70 percent and 90% humidity, and an yearly total rainfall of approximately 2400mm. The wettest period is generally from September to November with August also being very wet; regular thunderstorms can be expected in those months.
Penang’s high season is about Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Chinese New Year (check the lunar calendar; it might fall at the end of January or early to mid February), once the east coast of Malaysia is drenched and hordes of sun-seeking tourists descend on the island. Accommodation tends to be packaged, and priced accordingly
