Nick Sandmann told “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie that he wishes he and his classmates had walked away from an incident that has sparked debate across the country.

Nick, wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, stood opposite Nathan Phillips at the Lincoln Memorial as his classmates chanted around them. Nick is a junior at Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, Kentucky.

Some felt Nick and his classmates were disrespectful. Others thought they handled the situation with aplomb and were wrongly attacked.

“Do you feel from this experience that you owe anybody an apology?” Guthrie asks Nick in a 30-second clip of their interview, which will air tomorrow on the “Today” show at 7 a.m. “Do you see your own fault in any way?”

Nick responds by saying: “As far as standing there, I had every right to do so. I don’t – I – my position is that I was not disrespectful to Mr. Phillips. I respect him. I’d like to talk to him. I mean – in hindsight I wish we could have walked away and avoided the whole thing.”

  1. I would like to be the 250th person to write that it is unconscionable for you to make a video that takes Nathan Phillips at his word given the video evidence that contradicts his statements. And the 25,000th to think it.

p.s. I grew up liberal–probably more liberal than 2/3 of your newsroom. I know where you thought you were coming from. I'd like you to reflect on how low you have gone because of your distaste for Trump. Our old heroes like JFK, RFK, MLK would be appalled at your immaturity.

  2. There's also a difference between 'surrounding someone' and shuffling around to get a view of something. Just because people 'surround' another doesn't mean they do it in a threatening way. If you're in a group of people tightly packed, and there's an open space, it's natural to shift into that open space. Honestly.

Also, Mr. Phillips, yep, it's necessary to create a space to learn tolerance. I think you need that space yourself.

  3. Wow I better watch myself if we're somehow able to surround someone by never moving a step. You're well on your way to bankruptcy you dumb cunts. It is NOT a crime to stand there and smirk at an ignorant toothless meth-head. I hope they decide to sue you too.

  4. I think the whole point that everyone seems to miss is, why did the adults with the kids, allow them to just stand there. Why were they not taken elsewhere. This is about the ugliness of the black racists, this is about what adults should do and what their responsibility is. As a former teacher, my first response would have been to get those boys out of there and somewhere safe. Instead they encouraged them to start singing their school song. Really, what is wrong with you people. No wonder this boy thought it was okay to just stand there and look at the older gentleman with NO RESPECT. This is simple a case of a church bringing a bunch of young boys to protect Pro-Choice movement, most of them didn't even care why they were there, they just wanted to get out of the state. If this is what the Catholic church thinks is appropriate, I think they are going to need to talk to the Father above.

  5. What a clown show. There were many idiots on all sides that day. What everyone fails to fully acknowledge is this happened during Trump's Government Shutdown, so there were no United States Capitol Police on duty that day on the National Mall. Does anybody reading this believe this ridiculous situation would have gone on any longer than a few minutes had the USCP been on duty? The kid even says at @2:50 "I mean, in hindsight, I wished we could have walked away and avoided the whole thing". That ought to work great for them in court. They sat their taking abuse for over av hour and chose not to go anywhere else. This clip will be used in every case. By their argument, these kids might as well sue Trump for shutting down the government and endangering their visit to see the National Mall. If anything the parents should be investigated for child endangerment.
